A Chinese-grown green tea processed in the Japanese sencha style – steamed immediately after harvest rather than pan-fired, which is the defining process step that distinguishes sencha from traditional Chinese green tea. Available in 60-count compostable pyramid tea bags for service simplicity, in 90 g loose leaf tins for shelf programs, and in 1 kg loose leaf bulk for foodservice operations running by the cup. The cup pours pale green-gold with a soft vegetal character; serves equally well hot or chilled over ice for summer service.

Tasting Notes

The cup pours a clear pale green-gold with a soft vegetal aroma. The character is mellow and slightly sweet, with the bright, grassy quality that defines steamed green tea – distinct from the more roasted, nutty profile of pan-fired Chinese green tea. Low astringency at the recommended steep, no bitterness if the temperature window is respected, and a clean finish that holds up to a second infusion.

Origin

Chinese Sencha is the result of applying Japanese processing technique to Chinese-grown leaf: the leaves are steamed within hours of harvest to halt oxidation, then rolled and dried. The steaming method preserves a brighter green colour and a more vegetal cup character than pan-firing, the traditional Chinese method. The result is a tea that drinks like a Japanese sencha at a more accessible price point – a credible position for menus that want the steamed-green character without the cost of a Japanese-grown sencha. Green tea is naturally rich in antioxidants.

Brewing

Steep 2.5 g per 250 ml at 90 °C for 2 minutes. The shorter steep window matters operationally: green tea pulls bitterness past 2 ½ minutes, and the steamed sencha character reads cleanest in a brief, well-controlled infusion. At commercial scale, a 1 kg bag yields approximately 400 portions at 2.5 g per cup. Each 250 ml serving contains zero calories.
